Geographical Location
Nevada is a Western state, lying in the Great
Basin and Plateau section of the United States.
It is bordered on the north by Oregon and
Idaho. California is to the west and southwest.
To the southeast is Arizona, with the Colorado

eastern neighbor is Utah.

With mostly mountainous and desert terrain,

feet. The climate is arid and there is abundant

average temperature varies from 70º F in the
south to 45º F in the north. Nevada is the
driest state, with an overall average annual
rainfall of only about 7 inches. Summer temperatures
are hottest in parts of southern Nevada, while
winters can be extremely cold in western and
northern Nevada.

Name
The name ‘Nevada’ was officially adopted in
1861 when the Territory was established by
Congress. The origin of the state's name is
Spanish, meaning ‘snow-capped’.

capital of the United States. Resorts in Las Vegas, Reno, and Lake
